Private Browsing - Learn How to Hide Your Internet Activity

If you share your computer with other individuals or family members, you may want to remove any reference to your visit to this site.

Most Internet browsers now offer Private Browsing settings. If Private Browsing IS available, no sites, addresses or forms that you use will be remembered by the computer.

* REMEMBER to turn Private Browsing OFF after you finish visiting the sites you wish to view.

In the next sections, we will show you how to use Private Browsing and how to delete browser history for the following popular browsers:

Mozilla Firefox

Private Browsing in Firefox

[1] Click on the menu icon in the upper right corner;

[2] Click on New Private Window;

[3] A Private Browsing window will open with the purple Private Browsing icons as shown. Keep in mind that any bookmarks and downloads will be saved, even in Private Browsing mode! When you close the browser window, there will be no trace of your visited pages, searches, cookies or temporary files for that session.

* NOTE: If you do not see the Private Browsing icons when clicking on 'New Private Window' Firefox is likely already in permanent privacy mode. You can check this by clicking the Menu icon, then Options, and Privacy on the left. In the History section on the right, you may see that Firefox will: [Never remember history] ... that is permanent privacy mode, and you will not in such cases see the purple icons. Here is an example:

[1] Click on the menu icon in the upper right corner;

[2] Click on Options;

[3] Click on Privacy

[4] Click on 'clear your recent history';

[5] Choose an appropriate 'Time range to clear:' from Last Hour to Everything;

[6] Make sure the items you want to clear are checked off under Details, and Click the [Clear Now] button;

Google Chrome

Private Browsing in Google Chrome

In Google Chrome, you can initiate a private browsing session by:

[1] Clicking on the Menu icon in the upper right corner;

[2] Clicking on 'New incognito window';

[3] You will see the new incognito window with the grey background to confirm your browsing is private;

To clear your history in Google Chrome:

[1] Click on the Menu icon in the upper right corner;

[2] Click on 'Settings';

[3] Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and click on 'Show advanced settings...';

[4] Under Privacy, click on the [Clear browsing data...] button;

[5] Choose the time frame you want to clear the history for;

[6] Select all the boxes, with the exception of 'Passwords' if you want the browser to remember saved passwords;

[7] Click on the [Clear browsing data] button;

Apple Safari

Private Browsing in Apple Safari

To start private browsing in Safari:

[1] Click on the Menu icon in the upper right corner;

[2] Click on 'Private Browsing...';

[3] Click the [OK] button at the following prompt:

[4] Confirm that the word [PRIVATE] shows on the right side of the address bar:

To clear your history and files in Safari:

[1] Click on the Menu icon in the upper right corner;

[2] Click on 'Preferences...';

[3] Click on the 'Privacy' icon;

[4] Click the [Remove All Website Data...] button;

Microsoft Edge

Private Browsing in Microsoft Edge

[1] Click on the three dot Menu icon in the upper right;

[2] Click on 'new InPrivate window';

[3] A new private window will open, marked as private in several ways;

[1] Click on the three dot Menu icon in the upper right;

[2] Click on 'Settings';

[3] Scroll down in SETTINGS and click on the [Choose what to clear] button under 'Clear browsing data';

[4] Select the items you with to clear;

[5] Click on the [Clear] button;

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Private Browsing in Microsoft Internet Explorer

[1] Click on 'Safety';

[2] Click on 'InPrivate Browsing';

[3] Alternatively, if the 'Safety' menu is unavailable, or you prefer the keyboard, press and hold the Ctrl and Shift keys at the same time, tap the P key, and release Ctrl and Shift;

[4] You will see the InPrivate logo and notice showing that your session is now private;

[1] If you do not see a 'Tools' menu item, right click on the top of the window, and [2] click on 'Comman bar' so that there is a check mark beside it;

[3] Click on 'Tools';

[4] Click on 'Internet options';

[5] Under 'Browsing history' click on the [Delete...] button;

[6] Choose what you would like to Delete...;

[7] Click the [Delete] button;
