Hi! I’m Alicia. I’ve been working here at the shelter for almost 12 years. I started here shortly after I completed post-secondary school as a Frontline Crisis Counsellor, moved on to the Residential Manager role, and I’m now the Senior Manager, Programs. During my time here we have really evolved as an agency and continue to ensure that the work we are doing is serving our clients and community effectively. While the residential shelter is an important aspect of the work we do, we have a variety of programming available to women and children who may not need the safety of shelter. We are always looking at our programs to make sure they are meeting the needs of the community.
One of my favourite parts of my job is seeing or hearing about some of the transformations taking place with our clients and celebrating these successes. While it is difficult to measure some of these areas, we are able to see them and acknowledge them. Some women have never lived on their own before, so obtaining housing, setting up utilities, and getting needed items together is an immense task. It can be amazing to watch staff empower women to work through these areas.
As a staff team, we all say that we would love to work ourselves out of a job, but while the need exists we will continue to be here when people need us.
