Katherine is a 50-year-old lawyer. She has been married for 20 years to Gordon, an engineer.
Less than a year after their marriage, Gordon began to physically abuse her. When first he hit her, she was shocked. He apologized profusely; he was under great stress at work. “It will never
happen again,” he promised. But it did, and now he hits her often and scoffs at her objections.
She thinks, “I let it happen. It’s my fault. It would be too professionally and personally embarrassing to let anyone know. After all, I am a lawyer. I know my rights. I should have taken action right away. Now it’s too late. I’ve made my bed and must lie in it.”
It is not too late. No one should ever have to suffer abuse. Katherine could call the crisis line at Optimism Place and talk confidentially to a frontline counselor who is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
